Summer Learning Journey, Week 1: Day 2 - Activity 1

A House Or A Home

Some Wharepuni's have carvings of taniwha's and other kinds of māori creatures. My house that I live in, has no carvings at all. Lots of Wharepuni's that I have seen look way bigger then my house.

  1. Ciao Cassandra,

You are right, some wharepuni do have carvings that you most likely wouldn’t see in a normal house. I love that you have acknowledged the taniwha, because often we do see taniwha in traditional Māori carvings. Perhaps next time you could include some pictures of your house and a wharepuni so that readers can see the comparisons better.

I remember sleeping in a wharepuni with a heap of people, it had beautiful carvings on the outside and a Tekoteko (carving of person) at the very top of the roof. Have you ever been in a wharepuni before?

You have shared two differences between your home and a wharepuni. I’d love to give you full points for this activity, however the activity says that you also have to identify two similarities. Please edit your post to include two similarities between your home and a wharepuni as I would love to reward you with full points.

I’m looking forward to reading more of your posts Cassandra, I hope you’re having a wonderful holiday.

    Toe feiloa’i fo’i,

    Cia.

  2. Kia Ora Cassandra,

Cadence here from the Summer Learning Journey team. Thanks for sharing with us some differences between a Wharepuni and your home. I’m curious, maybe you could tell us some similarities you see as well? Have a go at comparing colour, size, and other features like a chimney or number of windows.

For example: My house is white and light green with a large chimney. It has a lot more windows than the Wharepuni which is mainly just for sleeping.

I can’t wait to read more of your blog posts! :)

    Keep up the great work!

    Cadence :)

  3. Hey Cassandra,

My name is Toeumu and i am a student in room 3 at Wesley Primary School.

It is cool hat lots of Wharepunis have carvings, interesting carvings. do you know what kind of carvings they are? Maybe next time you could add a picture to make it more interesting. This reminds me of when i was watching the news and i saw a Wharepuni with lots of carvings on it.

Have you been in a Wharepuni before?

    Looking forward to more posts.

    Have a beautiful day,
    Toeumu:)
